By ... Professor Dr. Suchatchatvee Suwansawat, the president of KMITL, the president of the Innovation Institute of Smart Community;
While I was writing this column, it was on Saturday night of June 30th, when I was closely following up the situation of the rescue the 13 trapped Wild Boars Academy or Mupa Academy footballers from Tham Luang Cave. The rescue teams from many places were working at their best attempt. Even the famous Buddhist monk Kruba Boonchum of Lanna area has also extremely performed the Buddhism ritual to activate morale. It can prove that Thai people are always united to help each other whenever they are in trouble. This cave scene reminds me of the collapse of a copper mine in Chile many years ago.
On Aug. 5, 2010, the collapse disaster of the copper mine in the midst of Atacama desert near San Jose, Chile, happened and made 33 workers were trapped underground deep down dark of 700-meter depth with impossible communication.
Nobody outside knew how bad the situation under the mine was. The rescue team of the glimmer of hope operated the drilling of 5 inches diameter hole from above towards some expected location of the survivors. It took several days for the drill to penetrate into the underground mine. Unfortunately, the first mission missed the mark, however, the team never gave up and several other holes were expectedly drilled. But with the constraints of hard rock of hard deep penetration and Chile was in the quake zone, the risk would be doubly increased. However, eventually, it could have one mission of the hole drilling mission close to the underground survivors. When the trapped survivors heard the sound of drilling they approached the point and sent the signal of survival up to the team. From that moment, food, drink, and more life supplies were delivered downward to them. Even some video clips from their supportive families were delivered to them as well to supply their spirits. Such the supplies could make them much stronger and hopeful. Finally, the team could take the rescue capsule down through the drilled hole to save the trapped miners safely. The operation took absolutely 69 days long to make the mission possible.
Since June 23, 2018, Thais have been concentrating on the rescue of the 13 trapped Wild Boar footballers inside the flooded cave. Compared to the case of the Chile mine collapse, we still have more hope to save the flooded cave boys. It appears that the case of the Tham Luang Cave would become both simpler and more difficult than the Chilean case. The simpler one is that the cave has the entrance to go down to help even serious flood happened to obstruct against; however, it still has powerful water pumps to be run for water drainage. Differently, for the case of the Chilean mine, the entrance was disappeared by serious landslide making no chance of rescue. The rescue team must absolutely do the hard drill down to the depth of 700 meters to save the expected survivors. Moreover, for the case of Thailand, the geological conditions of the Tham Luang Cave were mostly limestone softer than the igneous rocks around the Chilean mines case. For the survival of the Thai cave case, it becomes more difficult and complex because of serious rainy weather and turns to be the terrible barrier against the missions in all dimensions while that of the Chilean mine case still stayed typical dry as the usual desert climate was. Additionally, for the Thai cave case, the mission of some proper cave drilling of the proper small hole to be the way to send food, light, communication devices, could be hardly possible to meet the exact survivors’ position. It is because the cave surroundings are mostly covered with mountainous terrain. The transport and assembly of the drilling heads become really difficult. Although the rescue mission is hardly possible, I'm absolutely sure that the rescue teams must struggle against the storm of survival. Think about the triumph of the Chilean mines case and others’ worldwide, think about the very soon coming triumph of the Thai cave case as well. I as one of the Thai beings would really like to cheerfully support the rescue teams to securely rescue the trapped Boar Team of all young 13 footballers back home completely safely suddenly.
